32 Second Avenue (at Second Street), Manhattan
The Street of Shipsis a fascinating, 1/2 hour film by Charles Richards which chronicles the formation of the South Street Seaport Historic District as pioneered by the Friends of South Streetin the 1960's. Dramatic footage shows the neighborhood in its original state, when its buildings wore the patina of three centuries, and discusses the original intention to make this rare district a relevant destination for all New Yorkers. Peter Stanford and Terry Walton of the original Friends of South Streetwill be part of a panel discussion after the film is screened.
The film will be followed by a brief, vividly illustrated slide presentation on the East River Market District - past and future - by Robert LaValva, founder and director of New Amsterdam Market.

Posted September 8th, 2009 by Kristin PedersonThe New Amsterdam Market will make its début as a monthly institution at South Street by the Old Fulton Fish Market on Sunday September 13. Because this year marks the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage to the New World, New Amsterdam Market will join the Harbor Day festivities by representing the agricultural bounty of the lands visited by Hudson in 1609. Farmers, producers, and purveyors will sell fresh seasonal produce, meats and dairy, wild-gathered greens, breads, cheeses and cured meats, fruits, wine, and cider all from the Northeast, and with a special emphasis on the Hudson Valley.
