NYC SchoolFood -- Meet Chef Jorge & his SchoolFood Colleagues!
Since 2003 when SchoolFood Executive Director and FSNYC governing board member David Berkowitz took the reigns, SchoolFood thinking and operations has undergone a transformation. “Feed Your Mind” is the new tagline and agency vision! What’s changed? From removing trans fats, to breakfast ‘grab ‘n go’ pilots, to an entire new inventory of menu items added through product development, and a culinary-focused staff training program, Executive Chef Jorge Collazo and his colleagues have made significant inroads within an immense system.

We are delighted, then, to invite your participation on Tuesday, July 8th when our monthly Open Networking meeting will be hosted by FSNYC Governing Board member Jorge Collazo at the NYC Department of Education’s SchoolFood headquarters in Long Island City. Chef Jorge and colleagues will provide a behind the scenes view of the many innovations and collaborations that SchoolFood is undertaking across NYC school communities in 5 boroughs and our food system. The discussion will include:

  • Stephen O’ Brien – Manhattan District Coordinator SchoolFood in the field, working with advocacy groups, parents and school administration

  • Paul Uffer     – general procurement process

  • Billy Doherty     – local procurement initiatives; Garden to Cafeteria pilot
